Stark Ranch: Where Leadership Principles Shape a Modern Longhorn Program

by Shreene Johnson | Feb 17, 2026

Just north of Gainesville, where the Red River bends through rolling North Texas pasture, Stark Ranch is quietly building something special. Led by first-generation rancher Jeremy Townley, the operation blends disciplined leadership, thoughtful genetics, and strategic growth — all inspired by an unlikely mentor: Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun.

On From the Pasture with Hired Hand, Jeremy shares how ancient leadership principles translate directly into modern ranch management — from building a quality herd to investing in digital tools that support long-term success.

Meet Jeremy Townley: A First-Generation Rancher with a Builder’s Mindset

Jeremy’s path to ranching began in construction and business leadership. After years working alongside owner John Smith, he stepped into the role of Business Lead at Stark Ranch — overseeing both the land and cattle operation. Though experienced in construction, cattle were new territory.

His first mission was simple: learn everything.

“My first mission was to learn — learn from people who knew cattle better than I did.”

Jeremy immersed himself in ranch visits, conversations with breeders, and studying bloodlines, determined to build a program rooted in quality rather than shortcuts.

Knowing the Land: Stewardship on the Red River

Stark Ranch’s terrain offers rolling elevation, heavy tree cover, abundant water, and sweeping Red River views — beauty matched by functionality. Pasture rotation, grass management, and gradual herd expansion allow the ranch to protect soil health while scaling responsibly.

Jeremy emphasizes learning the land before pushing growth.

“If you’re having a bad day, drive the ranch — the scenery fixes it.”

Future expansion across the interstate — known as Stark Ranch West — will incorporate lessons learned from fencing design, weaning facilities, and cattle flow planning.

Building a Quality Herd: Genetics with Intention

Jeremy studies pedigrees relentlessly, using breeder websites and pedigree lookup software to track sire performance, sale averages, and bloodlines. His favorite families include:

  • Night Safari

  • Jammin’ Jenny

  • Miss Becca

  • Rebel HR and Hangin’ Tough influence

Mentorship plays a critical role, particularly from Bob Loomis, along with Rex and Sherese Glendenning.

“Bob Loomis is the reason we have the genetics we have today.”

Temperament and soundness remain non-negotiable traits — with horn structure and color layered strategically through breeding plans.

Favorite Calves to Watch

Several young calves already show promise, including daughters of In Like Flinn (Chex)

— Maddie, Bessie, and Betsy Bob — now raising Django calves that Jeremy describes as “shiny and exciting.”

“Maddie, Bessie, and Betsy Bob are In Like Flynn daughters — their Jango calves are really shining.”

Discipline in Daily Ranch Operations

Routine drives everything at Stark Ranch. Feeding schedules remain consistent. Morning meetings align the team on priorities, weather planning, and project sequencing. Small wins — from successful weaning to first brandings — are celebrated as milestones.

Jeremy’s favorite ranch tools?

  • Side-by-side UTV: Daily inspections and pasture monitoring

  • Skid steer: Feeding, fencing repairs, material handling

Consistency builds calm cattle and confident crews.

Lessons Learned: Quality Over Quantity

Early on, Jeremy admits he focused too much on head count rather than genetic value—a lesson quickly corrected. Today, Stark Ranch prioritizes breeding groups over sheer numbers, developing three core groups with plans for a fourth.

“One great cow beats ten average ones every time.”

Courage, Patience, and Leadership

Buying the first set of Longhorns was the scariest moment of Jeremy’s journey — stepping into unfamiliar territory with confidence built on mentorship. His favorite advice still guides him daily:
“Slow down — it’s faster.”

Trust, relationships, and transparency matter just as much as cattle quality in building credibility within the ranching community.

Why Stark Ranch Invested in a Professional Website

Jeremy views a ranch website as the gateway to credibility, marketing, and connection.

“If you want to be successful, you need a website.”

Through Hired Hand Websites, Stark Ranch showcases cattle photos, pedigree livestock data, ranch scenery, and ongoing updates — making it easier for buyers, breeders, and partners to engage with the program.

Looking Ahead: Building Industry Influence

Jeremy’s long-term goal is to see the Stark Ranch brand recognized across the Texas Longhorn industry — not just for growth, but for adding value, integrity, and leadership.

Staying patient, trusting the process, and building relationships remain central to that vision.
