Built on Grit: The Legacy and Philosophy Behind S&A Longhorns

There are some stories in the Texas Longhorn breed that don’t need embellishment. They’ve been shaped slowly—by land, family, cattle, and time. The story behind S&A Longhorns is one of them.

For Shawn Sayre, Longhorns aren’t a trend, a business experiment, or a recent passion. They are woven into his life across nearly five decades, passed down through family tradition and sustained by a deep respect for the breed’s past.

“I’ve been in the Longhorn business for 47 years,” Shawn shared. “It’s just what we’ve always done.”

Where It All Began: B&C and the Early Days

Shawn’s family roots in the Longhorn industry stretch back to the late 1970s, when his parents launched B&C Longhorn Ranch and what would become the legendary Show Me Longhorn Sale. At the time, Texas Longhorns were still considered unconventional in many parts of the country.

“People thought my dad was crazy,” Shawn recalled with a laugh. “They saw those horns and thought the cattle were wild or dangerous. They didn’t realize how gentle they were—or how tough.”

Longhorns quickly proved themselves. They were hardy, low-maintenance, and capable of thriving where other cattle struggled. Neighbors began asking to pasture them on overgrown land. Kids from Shawn’s school wanted to visit just to see the cattle. What started as curiosity turned into respect.

The Show Me Longhorn Sale followed soon after, eventually earning its place as the longest-running Longhorn sale in the industry. Over the years, it became a gathering point—not just for buying and selling cattle, but for sharing stories, building relationships, and passing knowledge from one generation to the next.

“You see the sons and daughters buying cattle now,” Shawn said. “The same families. The same passion.”

A Breed Transformed

Few people have had a front-row seat to the Longhorn breed’s evolution quite like Shawn.

“Back in the day, a 42-inch cow was a big animal,” he explained. “Now that’s heifer size.”

From horn measurements to body structure, Shawn has watched the breed change dramatically—sometimes in surprisingly short windows of time. The cattle of today would barely resemble what many early breeders remember, yet Shawn sees that evolution as a testament to intentional selection and long-term thinking.

“The breed has changed more than most people realize,” he said. “And it keeps changing.”

Carrying the Legacy Forward at S-A Longhorns

When Shawn and his wife Allison established S&A Longhorns, they weren’t interested in reinventing the wheel. They were focused on building something that honored the past while still standing on its own.

Their program centers around a distinctive and deliberate focus: black-and-white cattle.

“That’s our signature,” Shawn said plainly. “Black and whites—that’s what we like.”

Today, their herd is built around carefully selected foundation cows and proven bloodlines, including Saddlehorn, Blue Streak, Jamakizm, and Bow Hunter genetics. Each breeding decision is rooted in pedigree depth, horn quality, and consistency.

“We’re not chasing everything,” Shawn explained. “We’re building something we believe in.”

Land, Management, and Daily Work

S&A Longhorns is located in Brookfield, Missouri, on land that’s been in Shawn’s family for generations. The ranch operates on a rotational grazing system across multiple paddocks, using their own hay and manure to fertilize pastures.

“We’re pretty fortunate with our grass here,” Shawn said. “But you still have to take care of it.”

The daily rhythm of ranch life is supported by modern tools—tractors, chutes, and especially a Ranger that Shawn admits he’d be lost without.

“The cows know that Ranger,” he said. “They’ll follow it anywhere.”

Still, for all the equipment and planning, Shawn says his favorite season remains calving.

“Watching those calves play together—same age, growing up together—it never gets old.”

Family at the Center

Ask Shawn what tradition he hopes never disappears, and the answer comes quickly.

“Doing it as a family.”

From the early days of B&C to today’s S&A Longhorns operation, family has always been at the heart of the program. The Show Me Sale itself remains a family-run effort, focused less on profit and more on serving breeders and strengthening the community.

“We do this for the people,” Shawn said. “That’s what matters.”

He’s already thinking ahead to the next generation.

“My granddaughter will have Longhorns someday,” he said. “That’ll never change.”

Looking Ahead

After decades in the industry, Shawn isn’t chasing recognition or trends. His focus remains steady: good cattle, honest relationships, and preserving what makes the Longhorn breed special.

“If you want people to know who you are,” he said, “you’ve got to be willing to invest—in your herd, your name, and your future.”

It’s a philosophy built not on shortcuts, but on grit—the kind that doesn’t fade with time.
