The Total Package Cow: 35 Years of Breeding Wisdom with Nancy Dunn of Rolling D Longhorns

This article was written based on a podcast interview on From the Pasture with Hired Hand. You can listen to the full interview here or wherever you get your podcasts.

For more than three decades, Nancy Dunn of Rolling D Longhorns has quietly built one of the Southeast’s most respected Texas Longhorn programs. Her cattle—deep-bodied, maternal, correct, and often record-setting—are known nationwide. But as Nancy shares in this From the Pasture with Hired Hand episode, many breeders know her genetics… but not her story.

This episode brings that story into view: a childhood spent on a 100-year-old family farm, a lifetime in agriculture, the building of her breeding program, and the resilience required to return to the industry after a life-altering illness.

Rooted in a One-Hundred-Year Legacy

Nancy grew up on the Carter family plantation in Monroe County, surrounded by dairy cows, beef cattle, row crops, and the kind of hands-on work that builds character. Her grandparents ran a hand-milked dairy; her father and uncle expanded into row crops and beef.

She laughs, remembering that she never tasted store-bought milk until school—and didn’t like it. Those early experiences shaped her connection to livestock and land, a connection her siblings still share today as they live on the same property.

“It’s everything. It’s a feeling you can’t explain unless you’ve lived it.”

Finding Longhorns Through Team Roping

Nancy’s path to Longhorns wasn’t traditional. After studying agriculture at Auburn and working for the USDA, she found herself helping her husband and son at team roping events. One day—at what she calls “an advanced age”—she decided she didn’t want to work the chute anymore. She wanted to rope.

That decision led to buying roping cattle, then heifers, and eventually her first Longhorns.

She was hooked instantly. Their intelligence, maternal strength, and resilience won her over. With guidance from respected Alabama breeder Jimmy Jones, she began building a foundation she still values today.

“I fell in love immediately. They’re just different—they’re special.”

Her Total Package Philosophy

Nancy’s philosophy is clear and unwavering:
The job of a cow is to be a brood cow.

Horn matters—but never at the expense of fertility, udder quality, structure, disposition, or soundness. She’s raised multiple 100” cows, including: Dunn Lucky Dice — the first cow to sell at public auction over 100”, bringing $200,000 at the Legacy Sale.

Even with elite success, Nancy remains grounded in balance and maternal lines.

She encourages new breeders not to chase trends or be discouraged if early purchases don’t align with long-term goals.

“There’s no shame in starting over. You don’t know what you don’t know.”

Resilience, Recovery & Returning to the Breed

Nancy speaks candidly about her years away from the industry. A severe and unexpected illness left her bedridden, dependent on oxygen, and disconnected from events as futurities grew and the industry evolved.

Returning after nearly five years felt strange at first—but deeply meaningful.

“I missed the people more than anything. This breed is like family.”

Her resilience, along with her return, has inspired many across the Longhorn community.

What Nancy Wants the Next Generation to Know

Nancy’s guidance to new breeders is simple, timeless, and earned through experience:

  • See as many cattle in person as you can

  • Learn to evaluate traits for yourself

  • Build a herd based on your goals

  • Don’t chase trends

  • Raise cattle you truly like

Her story is a reminder that the heart of ranching is both heritage and hope.
